Kindergarten karate lesson seems to have made their day...

Yesterday, I taught 32 super cute 5-6 year olds karate at my kid's Japanese kindergarten in Saitama for the first time. 

How'd it go, you ask?

Well, afterwards when I had lunch with them, they had a 'discussion' over my presence making their day 50x, 100x, or a 1000x better than a normal day.

1000x better seemed too much they all thought, but most could agree on 100x better...

Kindergarten Sport's Day Karate Demo! 幼稚園運動会での空手演武！

Yesterday was the Seiritsu Gakuen Kindergarten's Sport's Day. At lunchtime the kid's karate club that Kakiya Sensei and I teach did a short karate demonstration with the 4-5 year olds and 5-6 year olds.

昨日、成立学園付属幼稚園の運動会が行われました。ランチタイムに、垣屋先生と僕が教えている空手教室の年中生と年長生が短い演武をしました。

This kids did a great job, especially with the 2 person punching and kicking game at the end where I hold out target mitts to see who can hit them faster.

生徒はとてもがんばり、上手にできました。特に最後の突き蹴りゲームでは、僕が出すターゲットミットに誰が早く技を出せるかを競いました。

Kindergarten class starts again!幼稚園の空手教室再開!

The kindergarten Karate class started again this week. There are three 30 minute classes, one class for each grade; ages 3-4 first year (nensho), ages 4-5 middle year (nenchu) and ages 5-6 the senior, graduating year (nencho).

成立学園幼稚園の空手教室が今週から再開しました。１学年で１クラス、３つの３０分のレッスンです。３歳と４歳の年少さん、４と５歳の年中さん、５と６歳の年長さん。

I always finish the very first class of the year for the nensho by reviewing the instructor's names. For example, a kindergarten teacher calls out my name or Kakiya Sensei's name, then the student has to run to the correct teacher. It's always cute when a student hears 'Kakiya Sensei', but runs to me, or vice versa.

毎年一番最初の年少さんのレッスンでは、教師の名前を復習することで、レッスンを終えます。例えば、幼稚園の先生が「リチャード先生」とか「垣屋先生」と言ったら、生徒は一人で正しい先生のところに走っていかなくてはなりません。「垣屋先生」と聞いて、間違えて、僕のところに走ってきたり、その反対があったりするのをいつも微笑ましく思います。

Maybe the sign that I have finally assimilated into Japan is when a 3 year old hears a Japanese name and then runs to me thinking I'm Japanese.

３歳の子供が日本語の名前を聞いて、僕のことを日本人と思って僕の所にくるということは、たぶん、やっと日本に同化したという兆候じゃないでしょうか！？

Kindergarten Entrance Ceremony! 幼稚園の入園式！!

Last Sunday was the Entrance Ceremony for new kindergarten students. I've been teaching Karate there for 6 years now every Tuesday afternoon. Also I teach English every Monday afternoon. Kindergarten classes are a highlight of my day. It is really special to see the students at 3 years old begin to learn how to just stand and punch, then by 6 years old they can do high kicks, a variety of footwork and most importantly understand the etiquette of Karate.

先週の日曜日は入園式でした。毎週火曜日の午後、僕が成立学園の附属幼稚園で空手を教えて早６年になります。また、毎週月曜日の午後に英語も教えています。幼稚園の空手教室と英語教室は僕の一日のハイライトです。３歳で立ち方や突きのやり方を覚え始める生徒の様子を見るのはとても特別な気がします。その子達が、6歳ではハイキックやさまざまなフットワークをしだしたり、そして最も重要なことに、空手のエチケットを理解するのですから。

Kindergarten Karate 幼稚園空手教室

My highlight every Tuesday is teaching Karate to the Seiritsu Kindergarten students with Kakiya Sensei's excellent support. We've been teaching Karate for the kindergarten for 4-1/2 years now! The practice lessons are 30 minutes long, first for 3-4yr olds, then 4-5yr old, and last for 5-6yr olds.

Last weekend, I heard about another private Karate club that has a kindergarten Karate program that is so strict the students often cry by the end. I was saddened to hear this because those kids will grow up with a negative view of Karate. It's important Karate practices teach discipline and a proper techniques, but lessons should also be fun too. I want to plant the seed of enjoyment of Karate for their whole life.

Our Karate lessons focus on enjoyment, basic form, and simple Budo ideas, like making sure everyone gets a turn. Kakiya Sensei is great at imparting these messages. Plus I try to mix Shiramizu's Arakawa Sensei's very positive approach to kid's classes with my own ideas to offer an unique experience.

Probably the kids will enter a new dojo when they become elementary students and be surprised the counting is done in Japanese, not English!

毎週火曜日のハイライトは垣屋先生のすばらしいサポートを受けての成立学園付属幼稚園の空手教室です。幼稚園で空手を教えて始めてから４年半になります。年少、年中、年長のクラスはそれぞれ３０分間です。

先週末聞いた話では、ある私立幼稚園での空手教室はとても厳しく、毎回クラスが終わる頃には泣き出す子もいるとか。そういう子は空手に対してネガティブな印象を持って育つんだろうなー、と思うと悲しくなりますね。空手の稽古ではしつけとかきちんとした技とかが大切なのはもちろんですけど、稽古を楽しむということも同じ位大切であるべきじゃないかと思います。みんなが人生を通して空手をする喜びを分かってもらえるような種を植えていきたいです。

私達の稽古が重きを置いているのは、楽しむこと、基本、そしてみんな公平に順番が回ってくるといった武道の思想です。その点を垣屋先生はとても分かりやすく子供に伝えるのが上手です。白水修養会の荒川先生が得意とする幼児クラスの指導法と、僕自身の考えを融合し、独特な体験をしてもらえるよう日々努力しています。

年長さんが幼稚園を卒業して小学校に入学し、別の道場に入ってまず驚くのは、道場での号令が英語ではなく日本語であるということかもしれませんね（笑）
