Unique kata judging style! 独特な形の審査スタイル!

At last month's Shiramizu Karate dojo's annual inter-dojo championships, a special kata judging style was used for the younger divisions.

For 3 minutes, 6 to 8 athletes would perform the same kata several times. The judges would walk around & choose 2 to 4 of the best athletes to move to the next round. For the semi-final and final rounds, regular flag rules were used.

I thought this was a great idea because the athletes got many more times to perform, and their level really shone through. We officials thought at first it would be difficult, but I found it quite fair. I'm just glad I've passed this young age of competing so I don't have to get too tired from doing this myself!
