Standing Oden & Karaoke! スタンデングおでん&カラオケ!

The last 2 months have had some big highs (grad school, work and side projects going well) with some big lows (funerals, injuries) so recently Pete and Rich blew off some steam with me at 'standing oden' and karaoke.

It was a great night and the 'finishing song' that Pete and I have has become a classic. If you want to know what it is, the rule is you'll have to come along sometime with us as it's a secret...

この２ヶ月、最高潮の時（大学院、仕事、いろんなプロジェクト）と同時期に、かなり低調の時（お葬式、怪我）がありました。そんな僕の憂さを晴らそう！とピーターさんとリッチさんがこの間にスタンデングおでん（立ち食いおでん）とカラオケに行ってくれました。

とてもとても楽しい夜でした。最近、ピートとカラオケに行くと締めの定番に歌う歌があります。その曲がなんだか知りたければ、僕たちと一緒にカラオケに行かないとダメなんですよ。秘密なんで。。。

Wadokai Kanto Regionals 和道会全関東大会

The Wadokai Kanto Region Championships was on Sunday, March 26 at the Komazawa Olympic Park. There were 12 competition rings and probably well over 1000 competitors. Unfortunately I couldn't compete because of my torn right calf muscle and I had a bad stomach flu that day too. But it was great to see many friends from different dojo (like Maeda Sensei's dojo), and to cheer on a kindergarten graduate who placed 3rd in his first tournament for kata, way to go!

今月26日（日曜日）に、駒沢オリンピック公園アリーナで、和道会全関東大会が行われました。1000人は優に超えそうな数の選手が12の競技場で競いました。残念ながら、僕は右足の肉離れとウィルス性胃腸炎のせいで不参加でした。それでも、いろいろな道場の友人と久しぶりに会えてよかったです。また、僕の応援していた幼稚園卒園生が、初めての大会出場で形で三位に入賞しました。頑張ったね！

Leg injury! 肉離れを起こしてしまいました!

Recently with my training partners I've been trying to do more challenging exercises, which I can also use to coach the karate students. Here I am with bands on the ankles, bands wrapped around the back to the hands, hitting suspended targets on an elastic band. So tough!

最近、トレーニング仲間と普段よりもきつい練習に挑戦しています。これは空手部の生徒にも役立つものです。両足首に巻いたバンドを背中の後ろに回し手首につないで 、更に天井から吊るしたゴムバンドのターゲットをパンチするのです。とてもきついです！

And I've been feeling in great shape, but 2 weeks ago I overdid it and tore my right calf muscle. It felt like getting hit by a hard golf ball shot from Tiger Woods. The doctor said I would be on crutches for 2 weeks and out for 6, but after 4 days I tossed the crutches, I limped for a week and now I can walk, because everyday I'm doing personal therapy and following R.I.C.E.

体調は万全だったのですが、2週間前、練習のし過ぎで右ふくらはぎが肉離れを起こしてしまいました！痛かった！タイガーウッズのショットをまともに受けた気分です。お医者さんには２週間松葉杖、６週間は安静にと言われましたが、４日間だけ松葉杖を使い、１週間はびっこをひいていたものの、今は歩けるようになりました。毎日自分でリハビリをし、R.I.C.E.をしています。Rest」（安静）、Iは「Icing」（冷却）、Cは「Compression」（圧迫）、Eは「Elevation」

When I'm old and fat, I can tell the young karate students I used to train so hard I tore the muscle from the bone...

将来年をとって体重が増えたら、若い選手に「僕は現役時代、肉離れするまで一生懸命練習したんだ」と言えます！カナディアンジョーク　: )

Kindergarten Graduation Party! 幼稚園卒園謝恩会!

This month I attended my 7th Seiritsu Kindergarten graduation party, which is my favorite event of the year! The third year students (6 years old) and their parents gather with the teachers for a fancy hotel lunch.

The kids, parents and even teachers put on performances.

Of course, when each student gives a message about what they liked most about the kindergarten, everyone cries, me too, I can't help it.

Now of course I truly know how other parent's feel to see their children having gone from ages 3 to 6 changing from almost a toddler to a young, capable child.

And this year's karate class graduates were really good too, so I hope you all keep up your kicking and punching!

今月、年間行事のなかでも特に好きな成立学園幼稚園卒園謝恩会に出席しました。卒園生（６歳）、ご両親と先生たちが素晴らしいホテルで集まってランチパティーをしました。　

生徒、ご両親と先生たちがパフォーマンスをし、最後に生徒がひとりずつ挨拶し、幼稚園で何が好きだったかを話しました。皆が泣き、もちろん僕も! その時のご両親の気持ちが本当に分かります、3歳で入園したときはまだ小さかった子どもが６歳に成長し、いろいろなことができるようになったのです。

今年の空手教室の卒園生も最高でした。みんな、パンチとキックを続けてくれるといいな！

Int'l Budo Seminar 国際武道文化セミナー

This month I attended the annual International Budo Seminar, hosted by the Nippon Budokan. This year’s theme was ‘Budo Education’. One point that was highlighted was that budo allows people of all ages to continuously interact in the same dojo space, which I’ve personally always appreciated. This lack of a barrier between seniors and juniors is good for society as people support each other more.

今月に、日本武道館の国際武道文化セミナーに参加しました。今年のテーマは「武道教育」です。中学生武道の必修化にともない、中学生はこの4月から、体育の授業で武道を何か一種類習うことになります。

ここで注目すべきは、武道を習うことにより、同じ道場で、様々な年齢の人々が互いに交流できるということです。これは個人的にも私が常に感じてきたよい点です。

人生の先輩と後輩のあいだの壁がなくなることは、お互いにもっと助け合う社会を作るのにも役立ちます。

Teaching Ayusa's History Seminars アユサの歴史セミナーを教えた

Yesterday I taught several American History seminar classes to Japanese high school students.

The students came from all over Japan, preparing for a summer home stay trip to the US via the Ayusa International Program.

The students were all really great to teach, and they seemed to enjoy the seminars by asking lots of questions. Plus I got a good laugh from trying to sing like Michael Jackson, for only about 3 seconds of course.

Everyone, have a good study trip to the States, and don't forget the seminar's history lesson!

昨日、アユサインターナショナル日本事務局による高校留学の春休み宿泊オリエンテーションで米国歴史セミナーを指導しました。ホームステイに行く準備として、全国から高校生が集まりました。教えがいのある素晴らしい生徒さんばかりで、多くの質問をしてセミナーを楽しんでくれたようです。マイケルジャクソンの真似をして歌った時のウケは良かったですよ。もちろん、歌ったのは秒ほどですけどね。

アメリカで、有意義な留学生活を送ってください。歴史の授業を忘れないでね！

High School Karate Grads! 空手道部員の卒業生！

今月4日は成立学園高等学校の卒業式でした。この写真は、制服を着た空手道部員の卒業生です。将来の夢が実現するように頑張って欲しいです！

Zebra 10 year anniversary party!成立ゼブラ創立10周年記念祝賀会!

On Saturday, Seiritsu Zebra community service club had it's 10 year anniversary party. Zebra offers basketball, Kyokushin karate, soccer and English conversation programs, mainly to elementary and junior high school students. So at the event I had to give a speech in Japanese about the English Friday afternoon classes still being small, but the kids are really enjoying it.

この前の土曜日に成立ゼブラ・クラブの創立10周年記念祝賀会を行いました。ゼブラ・クラブは主に小学生と中学生のために、バスケットバール、極真カラテ、サッカー、そして英会話を用意しています。記念祝賀会では僕が日本語で挨拶し、金曜午後の英会話教室はこぢんまりしていますが、生徒たちは本当に楽しみながら勉強をしていることを報告しました。
