Going under the knife でき物をとりました

It started with a small bump above my forehead, a spot left over from when I had chicken pox at 7 years old. Yet, recently it got bigger.

私が７歳のとき水疱瘡にかかって以来、おでこの左にあった小さなコブみたいのなのが始まりでした。それが最近大きくなってきまして。

So I had it taken out. Only four stitches. It's been a long time since I had my face stitched up from karate, so the pulling of the skin during the sewing was a feeling I had forgotten about.

そこで、取り除きました。４針縫っただけです。空手で怪我をして顔を縫ってからしばらく経つので、縫われて皮膚が引っ張られる感覚を忘れてました。

And that's the thingy. It looked like a peanut. It's off to a lab for tests, but it's probably just a blob of no importance.

そして、これが、その物体です。ピーナッツみたい。念のため検査に回されました、おそらく大したことない塊りだと思うんですけど。

Junior high boy's sparring! 中学生の自由組手！

On Friday the junior high school boys had their first full free sparring practice together using all the protective equipment. I think they were surprised that they are capable of more than they realized. For example, their ability to see techniques coming at them was better than expected.

金曜日に、男子中学生は、防具を全部使って初めて自由組手の練習をしました。 想像していたのよりも動きやすくて驚いたんじゃないかと思います。例えば、攻撃の技が来るのを見極めるのが予想よりも上手かったです。

Shiramizu Bonenkai 白水修養会の忘年会

All you can eat shabu-shabu with plenty to drink, lots to talk about, good speeches by everyone about their karate year plus hearing their hopes for next year, plus a little piano jazz music from the Shiramizu intern Pete and acoustic guitar from Mikiya all made for an enjoyable year-end party. It's hard for me to attend events being so busy, but luckily I was able to make this one.

しゃぶしゃぶの食べ放題、お酒の飲み放題、仲間の今年の反省と来年の抱負、研修生のピーターのジャズピアノ演奏、ミキヤさんのアコースティックギター演奏、盛りだくさんの忘年会は本当に楽しかったです。最近すごく忙しいので参加したいイベントに行けないことが多いのですが、この日曜日は時間があってよかったです！

男子団体組手決勝戦　京都府vs岡山県

While the whole tournament was enjoyable to watch, the men's winner Matsuhisa's fluid fighting style was quite amazing.

大会は全部面白かったですが、松久選手が組手で見せた流れるようなファイティング・スタイルはすごかったですね。

For my 'kata judging challenge' I got 8 out of 10 for the men's division before I had to attend a meeting, so that's not bad.

僕の「形審判チャレンジ」の結果は、ミーティングで全部見られなかったけど、男子形の１０試合中８試合は的中でした、まあ悪くないかな。

The women's fighting was very spirited this year too.

今年の女子組手は熱気にあふれていたと思います。

Hokkaido's kata athlete was Emiri Iwamoto, 2010 Wadokai World Cup Kata champion) who did Chinto in the first round. It was probably the first time a Wado kata has been performed at the JKF National Championships. Her kata was great and even though she didn't win the 1st round, it was nice to see a Wado kata athlete get this far with only Wado kata.
北海道地区形代表の岩本衣美里選手（2010和道会ワールドカップ形優勝者）が一回戦で和道流のチントーを演じました。おそらく全国大会で和道流の形をしたのは初めてだったのではないかと思います。彼女の形は素晴らしかったですが試合には勝てませんでした、和道流の選手が和道流の形だけでここまできたのはすごいと思います。

The exciting thing was the men's team kumite finals, Kyoto vs Okayama.
一番すごかったのは男子団体組手の決勝戦、京都府vs岡山県でした。

1st match: 3-1 for Kyoto.
１回戦　３－１京都府の勝ち。

2nd match: Nagaki from Okayama was winning, but after an accidental KO kick to his Kyoto opponent, he was disqualified, and the 8-0 rule went into effect for Kyoto.

２回戦　岡山県の永木選手が優勢でしたが、上段蹴りが反則になり失格に。８－０ルールが適用され京都府の勝ちとなる。

3rd match: 2-7 for Okayama

３回戦　７－２　岡山県の勝ち。

4th match: Araga of Kyoto first bumped his teeth into the opponent's head which stopped the match due to bleeding. After, he was winning, but he was not careful in the last 2 seconds by dropping his guard so the Okayama athlete landed a mawashi geri to to the score 4-4!

４回線　京都府の荒賀選手の歯が相手の頭にぶつかり出血のため試合は一時中断。その後、京都が試合をリードするも最後の２秒でガードを下ろしてしまったが為に岡山県の選手がすかさず回し蹴りをきめ４−４の引き分け。

5th match: 1 - 5 for Okayama, but they didn't have enough points so Kyoto won the division.

５回線　５－１岡山県の勝ちですが、得点が足らず、京都府が優勝しました。

The prefecture team kumite matches were today at the Tokyo Budokan.

今日は第38回全日本空手道選手権大会の団体組手戦が行われました。

The semi-finalists were;

Men: Kyoto vs Kanagawa, with Kyoto winning 3-1.

Okayama vs Osaka, with Okayama winning 3-1.

男子団体組手の準決勝は京都府vs神奈川県、3-1で京都府の勝利。

岡山県vs大阪府は3-1で岡山県の勝利。

Women; Tokyo vs Kanagawa, with Tokyo winning 2-1.

Kyoto vs Osaka, with Kyoto winning 2-1 in overtime.

女子団体組手の準決勝戦は東京都vs神奈川県、2-1で東京都の勝利。

京都府vs大阪府は延長戦になり、2-1で京都府の勝利。

Therefore tomorrow at the Nippon Budokan for the finals it will be for the men Kyoto vs Kanagawa, and for the women Tokyo vs Kyoto.

したがって、明日、日本武道館で、男子団体組手の決勝戦が京都vs神奈川県。そして女子団体組手戦の決勝戦は東京都vs京都府で行われます。

At today's event there were different levels of athletes. But there were no clear announcements or good signage as to how the tournament was progressing. Lots of people went to watch. I ended up finding a seat with a group of elementary school age Goju students from Shizuoka whose several parents had driven them to the event simply to watch and study.

今日の大会では、いろいろなレベルの選手がいました。 大会の進行状況をはっきり示す放送や表示などがなかったのは残念でした。多くの人が観戦に来ていました。 僕が見つけた席は静岡県から来た剛柔流の小学生グループの隣で、観戦し勉強するだけのために静岡から子供を連れてきていた保護者の方もたくさんいました。

Meeting of the minds 空手トークトークトーク！

Today I had a mind-meld with Shiramizu's Arakawa Sensei over lunch at a Turkish restaurant in Ikebukuro. Lots and lots of 'karate shop talk'. Sensei's positive enthusiasm is infectious. And we somehow always come up with many karate project ideas. Big ideas... ah, but good things come to those who wait so stay tuned...

今日、池袋のトルコ料理のレストランで白水修養会の荒川先生とランチをしました：頭脳の融合です。多くが空手の仕事の話。先生のポジティブな熱意が伝わると、ついこちらも熱くなってきます。そしていつも空手に関するプロジェクトのアイデアをたくさん思いつくのです。

ビッグ・アイデア。。。果報は寝て待て、ですね。

リチャードの毎年恒例形審判チャレンジ！

Every year I try to watch the Japan Nationals live. One of my goals is to watch the individual kata to make my own prediction who will win each round before the judges raise their flags. The current Shiramizu intern normally does this challenge with me. Generally I watch the division that starts first, men or women. Only in 2005 did I get 100% correct, so every year I keep up this challenge.

毎年、ＪＫＦ全国大会を生で見ています。ひとつの目標には、個人形戦で、審判が旗を揚げる前に誰が勝つか私の予想を立てながら見ることです。白水修養会館の外国人研修性とたいてい一緒にやります。男子か女子、始まる方から見始めます。１００％の正解率だったのは２００５年だけなので、毎年満点を取れるよう頑張ってます。

So today for my personal practice, I'm going to review all the 8 main shitei kata. Infrequently I will practice them because our high school club accepts all karate styles.

だから今日は自主錬として８つの指定形を復習しました。不規則ではありますが指定形を練習をしています。私の高校の空手部は流派を問わないので。

At last year's Japan Nationals, during the individual kata events for the 1st and 2nd rounds for women, I was able to predict all except for one match correctly! And even the match I got wrong, it was split 3-2 so I don't feel so bad. Actually, by the 2nd round I was not only predicting who would win, but the number of flags for each competitor too. Ooo, spooky.

去年の全国大会の時、女子個人形の１回戦と２回戦では１試合を除いて全部正解しました。その間違えた試合も、３－２の結果だったのであまり落胆はしませんでした。実は、２回戦から勝ちの予想だけでなく、旗の数も予想してたんです。物好きですね。

So does this mean I'm ready to challenge the highest levels of officiating in Japan? No, it just means sitting 80 meters away in the 3rd level of the Budokan I'm pretty good. I don't think the JKF will let me try the next level of the official's tests from that far away though...

ということは、日本で最高レベルの審判にトライ出来るということになるのでしょうか？いえいえ、武道館の３階から見ている分にはいいというだけのことです。８０メートルも離れたところからの審判のテストなんてJKFが認可するはずもなく。。。

Japan National's Draw Sheets! JKF全国大会組合表、ローマ字で！

The JKF has kindly released the Dec 11-12 Japan Cup National Championship's Draw Sheets. This is a very good idea for helping fans prepare for the tournament.

To help people who don't read Japanese, I added romaji to all the athletes names and their locations. Also, on the kata sheet there was extra space so I included recent tournament results for each athlete.

全空連が親切にも12/11-12に行われる全国大会の進行表をホームーページで掲載しました。大会に備えるのにとてもいいアイデアですね。

日本語を読めない人のために、僕が選手名と都道府県名をローマ字で入れてみました。あと、形の進行表にスペースがあったので、選手の最近の大会成績も加えました。
